Frequently Asked Questions . . .
If you are allergic to LIDOCAINE, Epinephrine (other numbing agents) or tattoo ink, we cannot perform any Cosmetic Tattoo services on you. Lido & Epi are some of the types on numbing agents we use.
Clients with any of these conditions should contact their doctor to determine if they can have this procedure. (we cannot make this determination for you. you must consult your medical professional).
Semi-permanent make-up, also known as micropigmentation, is a form of temporary cosmetic tattooing that utilizes pharmaceutical grade pigments that are applied with a tattoo machine beneath the surface of the skin. Used to enhance, correct and contour eyes, brows and lips. This pigment will stay in the skin for a number of years, gradually breaking down and fading over time.
Am I a good candidate for Semi-Permanent Makeup? As long as the procedure area is healthy, non-sensitive and non-irritated, you can receive tattoo services. If you have had previous surgical work or tattoo services in the area before, please send us a photo of your face in GOOD lighting (outdoor is usually best), so we we can see your brows, lips etc prior to scheduling. Send an email to: BrowBaeby@gmail.com.
This completely depends on the individual. Cosmetic tattooing is an enhancement, not a complete replacement for topical makeup. Healed pigment IN the skin will never fully replicate the vibrancy of color that topical makeup produces ON the skin.
Many women are accustomed to bolder looks with makeup that cannot be successfully achieved without risking undesirable results. LESS IS MORE! The more your skin is packed with pigment particles, the less control you have over the color as your procedure ages with time. Soft and natural will always win!
Powder Brows is the only semi-permanent makeup service suitable for ALL SKIN TYPES, (even oily skin). The "ideal candidate" for Micro-Blading is only about 30% of those wanting a brow tattoo service. It is not recommended for mature skin types, oily skin, those with large pores, very pale or highly melanated skin. Over time, those "hair-like" strokes will fade or bleed together and end up looking like a splotchy semi-powder brow anyway and often very dark gray/blue. If you're in LOVE with "hair strokes" you should look into "nano-brows" .. its hair strokes done with a machine and NOT a blade, so they last longer and don't cause scarring.
In my personal opinion, I believe that Microblading is too harsh. They will fade faster than Powder, take longer to heal and can cause micro-scarring due to the trauma of cutting into the skin. They will also (over time) appear more "ashy" in color (blue/gray), which is harder to color correct later, if at all. If you happen to have little to no hair, Powder Brows are great for you as it provides a more shaded effect and will give you a more realistic looking eyebrow. Powder Brows are also great for people with hair as well, especially if you’re looking to add more dimension and shape. The Powdered Brow technique lasts 1-3 years based on your lifestyle, skin type, UV exposure and after care.
1. Send me a photo. In order to determine whether a touchup, coverup or correction can be done, I need to see how much saturation is still in the procedure area. email photo: browbaeby@gmail.com (no makeup and in GOOD lighting).
2. Please include how long ago you had the procedure done, including any touchups.
3. The type of procedure done? (Microblading, Powder etc)
4. What is it that you are requesting? Cover up? Color Correction?
5. Is there anything you want to change about your current PMU? (size, shape, color)
Saturation is the amount of pigment (color) in a Cosmetic Tattoo.
The level of saturation determines if a cover-up or touch-up can be performed over previous work.
Like a cup of water, your skin can only hold so much pigment/ink. If it's too "full", there is no space for new pigment. Unlike endless coats of paint on a wall, your skin is porous, and like a sponge.
Low saturation means there is enough room for the new pigment!
High saturation means there is not enough space in the skin for new pigment.
Options are; 1. wait for brows to fade naturally
2. tattoo removal to;
a) fade them enough to be gone over
b) remove them completely to correct/improve shape & color
"I know my brows are pretty saturated, but I want them touched up anyway" ... If we touched them up now, the result would be very temporary. Remember the CUP example! If your cup is already full, any added pigment would just fall out. Your brows will look the same as they do now within a few weeks/months.
If you're unsure about whether or not a cover-up can be performed, or if it's touch-up time, contact me so we can discuss your brow goals 😍
Its a tattoo! Of course there will be some discomfort. However, topical anesthetics are used to maximize your comfort during the cosmetic tattooing procedure. Most clients describe the pain level as a 0-3 out of 10. Some even fall asleep. But of course, pain tolerance varies from client to client. NOTE: receiving the procedure during your menstrual cycle may increase your sensitivity as well.
By the end of the procedure, the numbing cream is wearing off and you're feeling a slight sting (sort of like a sunburn), and the skin is irritable and sensitive to touch due to the vibration of the machine and stretching of the skin to ensure clean, crisp tattoo work. (for me, this is the most uncomfortable part of the whole process ... the last 10-15 minutes or so). BUT ... we are almost done ... Just a few finishing touches are usually needed at this point to attain desired results.
Everyone is different and healing times vary according to your health & lifestyle. Generally speaking the skin surface will heal in under a week, and the basal layers (underneath layers) of the skin take a little longer. This said, there is no real down time as long as you follow the Post Care Instructions.
EYEBROW TATTOO HEALING PROCESS
Semi-Permanent Cosmetic Tattoo can last for many years. The actual length of time is variable and depends on many factors such as lifestyle, UV/sun exposure, skin type, beauty regimen, the density of color implanted into the skin (softer enhancements do not last as long as strong, bold enhancements). We recommend a touch-up ($75) within 3 months of your first session. This will allow us to check healing and ensure the desired color & saturation has been achieved.
*Please note that final results CANNOT be guaranteed as everyone retains and breaks down pigment differently. A follow-up appointment is recommended between 6-12 weeks where we can assess your pigment retention and make any changes necessary. People with lighter hair, correction work or sparse eyebrows may require more than one follow-up to reach their desired look at an additional cost.
Most appointments take 2-2.5 hours from start to finish. Typically the longest portion of the appointment is in the "shaping & prepping" part. A technique called Mapping is used to help find the ideal brow or lip shape for your face. This is where we see al the a-symmetries of the brows or lips and work on making the corrective adjustments needed to get as close to symmetrical as possible. YOU are part of this entire process, step-by-step. Your brows/lips are drawn on in the manner in which they will be tattooed for your approval before starting the actual service. Once you have decided the shape suits your desire, we will begin the procedure.
As a REMINDER: Brows are Sisters, NOT Twins! Its impossible to make them identical as our faces are just NOT symmetrical. Only 2% of the worlds population has a symmetrical face.
BROWS: Yes, most likely. In my experience, clients are most nervous about going too dark in color or too thick in brow shape. So, they tend to stay on the conservative side and wait to see the Healed Results (4-6wks) before deciding if they want to a touchup to add more color or thickness to the shape. Brows will fade in color from 1st/2nd day Initial session approx 30-40% and shrink in shape about 10-20% (due to skin swelling etc), so the healed results are much softer in shape and color than Initial session.
LIPS: Yes. Lips heal sooo fast, and fade at least 50% in color that 2+ sessions are generally needed to build color to achieve desired results. Lip Neutralization is a 2+ appt procedure for sure.
Take into consideration also that every body heals differently and results vary depending on many factors; skin type, skin health, lifestyle, general health, medications, UV/sun exposure and skin care products used. If you have oily skin, textured skin (large pores, wrinkles, etc.) ** touch-up prices are listed under the SERVICES tab**
POWDER BROWS: are meant to look more soft and natural. The look is created by tattooing tiny, pixelated dots on the skin in layers. This is what creates the "powdery" effect. Based on how many passes, color choice, preferred style and how the individual clients skin heals and retains pigment, there may be areas of the tattoo that are slightly lighter/darker than others. Within 1-2 weeks of your first session the color will fade as much as 30% or more (lighter) in shade and will heal to a more natural makeup look.
This is where a "TOUCH-UP" comes in. After your brows have fully healed (at least 4-6 weeks from your initial appointment), a touch-up is where you can decide if you want to make minor color or shape changes. Other than your initial 6-12 week touch-up, the beauty about Powder Brows is that you can go without a touch up for quite some time. Typically, 1-2 years. (I personally like mine done every 12-18 months because I prefer a bit of a bolder color so I don't have to add any makeup to them at all, and because I have super oily skin which does break down pigment faster than those who do not). ** touch-up prices are listed under the SERVICES tab**
LIP BLUSH: Is a 2+ step process. Lips heal very quickly and change color dramatically from your initial session to the "healed" results. They will lighten about 50% once fully healed vs what they look like when you've finished your first session. And they change again and again over 6-12 weeks as they continue to fully heal. Trust the process! Lip Blush typically lasts 2-3+ years. We recommend an Annual Refresh (done within 2 years of your 1st session, at a discounted 50% off the current rates, for our CURRENT CLIENTS who have received tattoo work by me). A great way to keep your cosmetic tattoo work crisp.
The rule of thumb is to go with a color that is similar to your natural brow hair color. If you have little to no brow hair, I would recommend a color based on your skin tone and natural hair color.
Do you have to shave off my eyebrows? NO!
Just like tweezing or waxing, we only remove the brow hairs that are outside of your chosen shape and retain your natural brow hair to include it into the design of the Powder Brows tattoo.
Will it look like lipstick? NO. It does not replace your lipstick. It will however give your lips a natural, opaque and blushing of color (similar to a tinted chapstick). Like "blush" on your cheeks, Lip Blush will add a tint of color and gently accentuate the shape and color of your lips. You can still apply lipstick or any other lip product over your lip blush tattoo. If you want a wake up with make-up look that doesn't "look" like you have makeup on, this is what this service provides.
As we lose collagen and elasticity in our skin, the natural color in our lips starts to break down and we lose our shape. Making our lips appear smaller and dull in color. Not only are you able to add color, but we can also help to camouflage minor asymmetries, scarring or hyperpigmentation. We cannot tattoo outside of the lip tissue, so blushing will not change your lip size, but WILL create the appearance of fuller looking lips.
How Long Does Lip Blushing Last?
Results will vary from person to person, but on average, can last anywhere from 2-3+ years. Each year you will see the color get lighter until it disappears. It will gently fade out exposing the color of your own lips. It is recommended to do a touch-up within 3-months of your initial session. This is due to your body wanting to push out pigment in the healing process. Because lip tissue regenerates so quickly, an "Annual Refresh" is recommended every few years or as desired for maintenance.
Of course pain level is different for everyone, and come on, its a tattoo (lol). Some are more sensitive than others and especially so if you do not follow the pre-care instructions. The process feels like having a sunburn that you keep touching. Its uncomfortable, but tolerable for most people.
We do however use topical numbing agents to keep you as comfortable as possible (Please beware that if you are allergic to numbing agents, we would have to perform the procedure with no anesthetics).
Bring in your favorite tinted chapstick or lip stain or a photo of another HEALED lip blush tattoo you like for reference. We will then custom create a color just for you to come as close to replicating it as possible.
If you're still unsure about color, we can help guide you in color options that best fit your complexion, lifestyle and shape. My suggestion is to go with a lighter color that will heal most naturally, and then later you can bump up the color a shade or two if you choose to do a second session.
For me personally, I had super light swelling (which is typical), but again, everyone reacts differently. Some don't swell at all and others can look as if they just stepped out of the plastic surgeon's office with fresh lip injections. In my experience, the swelling and numbness completely fade within a few hours.
Immediately after your appointment, your lips will appear super bright and stained, but don’t panic! This color will fade up to 50% once fully healed. After 4-7 days, the color seen at your initial appointment will have sloughed off and you will notice a light, milky color.
KEEP YOUR LIPS MOISTURIZED all day, every day for the next few days!! You will be given a take-home aftercare kit that will include your lip ointment. You will need to coat them with a thin layer of ointment many times throughout the day. Please avoid eating or drinking spicy, citrusy, or salty foods, and it's also best to wait at least 4-days before working out again to preserve the ink. As you work your way through the healing process, by day 3 or 4 , your lips will become dry and start the shedding phase. The biggest thing to remember is not to pick or bite your lips. As tempting as it is, you have to let your skin shed and flake off on its own — otherwise, you could lose your color. After 6-8 weeks, your color will be completely developed, and you'll see your final results. Soft & naturally blushed.
If you sre someone who has EVER had a cold sore, it is recommended to take an antiviral medication prescribed by your doctor (like Valtrex, Acyclovir) at least a few days before and a few days after your lip blush.
This procedure can cause the dormant virus to "wake up", so it is important to ** Contact your doctor BEFORE scheduling your procedure to ensure you have the appropriate prophylactic medications on hand to start antiviral therapy accordingly. **
Bleeding during the procedure: Excessive bleeding during your appointment will greatly affect how your body retains pigment. It actually will push pigment out of the skin while trying to apply the tattoo. And, while this is not entirely in our control, it is important that you follow prep instructions to help minimize bleeding. This includes avoiding blood thinning medications, alcohol and caffeine before your procedure.
** As with every tattoo, we recommend avoiding pools, salt water, and extreme sun exposure for at least 2-weeks following your appointment, so make vacation plans accordingly!
** Please make sure you are healthy enough to be tattooed before scheduling an appointment!

How each individual's skin will react and heal is completely out of my control. So, the answer is NO. The procedure & healing process is different for each and every face and there are SO many factors that must be taken into consideration; overall health, age, skin type, skin care routine & products used, UV/sun exposure & the following of aftercare are all contributing factors.
This is also why it is generally typical for a touch-up session to be needed. The same steps are done for every procedure and with each and every client. How your body/face accepts and retains pigment is completely dependent on each individual persons skin and lifestyle.
Each client is important to me and the results of every procedure are of the utmost regard. I strive to give you my best by managing expectations; by providing you with the information, risks, cautions etc about the procedure, how to prepare and prep, what to expect and the ideal candidate for cosmetic tattoo.
Please know that there are no guarantees when choosing to modify your face with an elective procedure.
